What is 'waste'? Waste is
the result of production and consumption of material goods. Only a short
while ago, waste was simply thrown away or burned. In most economic
theories, the absorption capacity of 'the environment' is deemed to
be infinite. With 6.5 billion people on the planet earth, we are confronted
by the fact that this assumption is blatantly incorrect. As a result,
we have no other choice than to rethink 'waste' and treat it as a new
type of resource. However, can everything be re-used? Is it possible
to just treat waste as a resource? What do we need to do, to do so effectively?
If it were simple, wouldn't we have done so long before? During this
event, some examples of effective and promising approaches to waste-management
are presented.

Diana
den Held,
strategic advisor for Michael Braungart (Cradle to Cradle)
Cradle to Cradle, what to do with it?
Cradle
to Cradle (C2C) is a model, developed by Michael Braungart and William
McDonough. At a high pace its being implemented on a world wide
scale. In this model a company is being organised in such a way that
the outcome is beneficial for as well the Company, the Environment
as Society. The Netherlands take an important place in the implementation
of C2C: our country functions as a blue print for the rest of the
World. In this lecture, strategist Diana den Held tells about Cradle
to Cradle and she will point out a few differences between traditional
sustainability thinking and the Cradle to Cradle approach. She hopes
to inspire you to take (further) steps on the Cradle to Cradle road.
Peter
van Zwol,
Owner, Solarix - Biodiesel Professionals
Second Generation Biofuels
Peter van Zwol talks
about the second generation of Biodiesel, about different and innovative
large-scale waste processes (cooking oils, animal fatty substances
and biomass/organic waste). The resulting second generation Biodiesel
is produced without reallocating food stocks for energy production.
What are sustainable technologies for the production of biodiesel,
bio-ethanol and bio gas from organic waste?
Bram
Kranenburg,
Technical Manager, Icopal Benelux
Bitumen
End of Life Solutions (BiELSo), recycling of old bituminous roofs and
making new roofing materials out of it.
BiELSo is the abbreviation
of Bitumen End of Life Solutions. Traditionally, bitumen is made of
a non-renewable resource, oil. BiELSo is a process that allows virtually
endless recycling and re-use of the bitumen ('raw') materials by harvesting
'old' roofing materials. Additionally, substantial reduction of CO2
is gained. The advantage is that less waste is produced and 'new'
oil can be used for other purposes.
John
Kuipers, Founder, Sweep - Second Life for Oil
Plastic to Oil
In
todays hectic world we pass through life hastily, and as we
do, we use an enormous amount of energy. In that process we create
enormous piles of garbage, varying from small candy wrappers to complete
dumps with 1000's of tonnes of waste plastic.
John talks about new technologies that convert waste plastic
into semi refined oil.

Exhibition
Waste from Production - Production from Waste
by Stefan Lehner, En-Fer Atelier
The growing waste mountains
threaten our environment but all waste has also an enormous potential.
Waste must at least be recycled. To lose less energy and materials we
can even up cycle it. Design with waste can be done at different level.
More we use obvious and hidden waste potential, less we need new raw
materials and energy. Stefan Lehner is doing since 22 years studies,
prototypes, limited editions and serial production of interior objects
based on waste and its potential.

Sustainable Energy Europe
The future landscape of European energy supply and demand
will have to make much greater use of new renewable energy sources and
focus more upon energy-efficient methods. Today, we can be proud of
the fact that Europe is already a leading advocate in the fight to halt
the depletion of natural resources and prevent climate change. Our task
is now to persuade both consumers and key decision-makers of the benefits
of sustainable energy production and use.
The Sustainable Energy
Europe Campaign is a European Commission initiative in the framework
of the Intelligent Energy - Europe programme, which aims to raise public
awareness and promote sustainable energy production and use among individuals
and organisations, private companies and public authorities, professional
and energy agencies, industry associations and NGOs across Europe.

Qualit Datamatics
QD is a private owned organisation dedicated
to technology transfer, in various countries where inbalances in development
between urban and rural areas exist. Such imbalances hamper the national
development due to the wastage of human and natural resources.
By the acceptance and use
of innovative technologies, this situation may be redressed. This assumption
is based on the observation that human behavior changes, when new technologies
are accepted and absorbed. In other words: once accepted, innovative
technologies can cause social innovation.
It is QD's goal to select
technologies which are innovative, attractive, maintenance free, modularized
(with local construction components), solving immediate problems, and
that can be operated in a decentralized way (= effective management).
The technology sectors QD
has choosen are water, biogas, wind energy systems, dairy, light, automotive
and innovative decision support systems on urban planning for rural and
urban areas.

Peter
van Zwol
Owner, Solarix - Biodiesel Professionals
Solarix has specialised in equipment for the production of biodiesel
from sidestreams like used cooking oil. Besides this we have developed
the Eco Energy concept for producing energy from waste. The concept
enables the production of biodiesel and biogas from waste.
Furthermore we are developing
new concepts for sustainable energy amongst other we are working on
algae and solar energy.

Digital technology is rapidly transforming our society, our business
practices and lives. Technology is a driver, but not the real issue.
Adoption by individuals, companies and governments is far more important.
But how can we manage the technology, the adoption process and the effect
on our businesses and private lives, without getting lost in that change?
