Waag Society
Waag Society is the name of what started in 1994 as 'Society for old en new Media', de Waag. Founders were Caroline Nevejan and Marleen Stikker, who is still Waag Society's director. Before, Stikker was the mayor of the Digital City, the first internet community in The Netherlands.

The Society's -soon to be called 'Waag Society' - mission was to make new media available for groups of people that have little access to computers and internet, thus increasing their quality of living. After a complete restauration of the Waag building, a small group of enthousiastic idealists began their activities in 1996.

The medialab developed into an avant-gardistic thinktank with a lot of freedom. But with an eye for commercial possibilities: attempts were made to bring Waag prototypes to the market. Waag Society grew into an institution that was active in the fields of networked art, healthcare, education and internet related issues like bandwidth and copyright.

The international network became increasingly important: Waag Society has a worldwide network with partners in countries like India, Canada and the UK.

Nowadays, Waag Society is an acknowledged institute where apart from R & D, there is room for experiment with new technologies, art and culture. Partners come from all parts of society: universities but also companies work together in our projects.

Van Eesterenmuseum

The Van Eesterenmuseum tells the story of Cornelis van Eesteren, designer of the Algemeen Uitbreidings Plan, the AUP (General Expansion Plan). This plan was drawned in 1935 and provided an expansion of the city to be ready for 1 million citizens in the year 2000.
The Westelijke Tuinsteden (garden city) became world famous among cityplanners and architects. Other parts of the AUP are Buitenveldert, parts of Watergraafsmeer and parts of Amsterdam North.

On the map Van Eesteren designated areas for housing, working, traffic and recreation. Air, (sun) light and space were the leading principles.
Van Eesteren was a man of broad views and modern ideas. His unique and groundbreaking AUP (expansion plan) for Amsterdam is completely dominated by the theme of Het Nieuwe Bouwen (The New Building): a collective name for stern building styles and radical new town-planning developments in the period 1915 - 1960. Typical for the so-called Nieuwe Bouwen (New Building) is the spatial separation of housing, recreation, traffic and workplace.
60 years after building the Westelijke Tuinsteden the area is pointed to be renewed. A group of people who were concerned about too much destroying their neighbourhood succeeded is getting the status of 'protected city area' for Slotermeer. The Van Eesterenmuseum is located in an old school building which is now re used as a cultural 'breeding place'.
